YOKOHAMA (FOR TOKYO)
The wide ocean, the harbour with its special atmosphere, the hill which stands in a row of steep slopes, a Chinatown which is full of exotic moods – there are so many “postcard scenes” in Yokohama. Not surprisingly, many movies have been made here. Visit Kamakura with its temples and 35-foot-high Great Buddha. Take a bullet train to see Mount Fiji, or pack an overnight bag and set out for the ancient cities of Japan: Kyoto and Hakone.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS Kotokuin Temple & Daibutsu - Kamakura's massive bronze sculpture of the Amida Buddha towers over 42 feet (13m) high. Cast in 1252, the statue sat in a temple hall until a 15th century tsunami swept the building away, leaving the Buddha behind. The position of the statue's hands signifies steadfast faith.
Hakone National Park - Located 50 miles (80km) from Tokyo, this beloved national park includes Mt. Fuji, mountain lakes, and the geothermal Izu Peninsula. Lake Hakone and Mt. Fuji have inspired painters and poets for centuries.
Lake Ashi - Board an excursion boat for a cruise around the tranquil lake. On a clear day, the still lake waters reflect the inverted cone of Mt. Fuji.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS Golden Pavilion and Gardens - Built by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu as a villa in 1397, the three-story home was converted to a temple by Yoshimitsu's son. The Golden Pavilion follows the Shinden architectural style of the Heian Period and is positioned at the edge of a tranquil pond. Walk through the peaceful gardens and marvel at the mirror reflection of the temple on the still waters.
Nijo Castle - Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu built the castle as a residence, not a fortress. The inner tower (the donjon) of the castle was destroyed by fire, but the Ninomaru (Second Inner Palace) remains. View the Ohiro-ma, the spectacular long hall in which the Shogun would greet warriors and visitors, and view the gorgeous and elaborate screen paintings and carvings. While treading the nightingale floor, listen for a distinct chirping sound, a cleverly designed alarm to alert the castle's residents to the presence of intruders.
Heian Shrine - One of Kyoto's newest historical sites, the shrine is also known as the Shrine of Peace. Built in 1895 to mark the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto, the shrine is dedicated to two emperors: Emperor Kammu, the first emperor to rule Kyoto, and Emperor Komei, the last emperor to live out his reign in the city. The enormous vermilion-coloured Torii gate stands over 70 feet (21m) in height and is the largest in Japan. A particular highlight is the sacred garden, which boasts weeping cherry blossoms, water lilies, bush clovers, and azaleas in season.
